Body observation, image composition and pencil drawing

How much space does a gesture occupy?

Six bodily poses against a common grid are translated from photographs into pencil outlines, then brought together in an overlapping composition. Extension, turning and contraction become ways of observing spatial occupation. Made at the beginning of architectural study, the exercise connects photographic records, drawing and an awareness of scale, using the body as a reference for understanding space.

Extension within a grid

Straight, outstretched and diagonal poses are compared against the same grid. Photographs record the body in relation to its background; pencil lines retain its outline, joint directions and the spaces between limbs. Removing texture and shading makes extent and occupation easier to read, connecting an abstract idea of scale to a particular bodily gesture.

Gathering, turning and overlaying

Curled, bent-knee and gathered poses produce different boundaries. Each photograph is paired with its drawing, showing how changes in posture alter the shape of occupied space. The cover overlays six outlines into a composition of gestures, connecting the drawing exercise to a wider concern for movement as well as static bodily dimensions in architectural design.
