How can historic roofs, columns and drawings inform new spaces for coastal observation?
Working from Mount Stuart’s archives, roof structures and column shadows, the project uses overlaid drawings, models and changes of scale to reconsider the relationship between the house and the coast. An individual redevelopment creates connected working and living spaces for observations of biology, pollution and geography.
Working with the archive
Studio research begins with Mount Stuart’s archives and architectural fragments, superimposing plans, elevations and sections to examine relationships across scales. Material from the Mount Stuart Archive and Rowand Anderson Collection becomes a basis for design work. The early model investigations and exploration of the coastal site include collaborative research.

Taking fragments to the coast
Column shadows, the central roof and the boathouse are brought into the coastal setting through changes of scale, cuts and recombinations in models. Biology, pollution and geography establish three fields of observation. These themes give the formal investigations a programme, relating inherited elements to research activities and positions within the site.

Revisiting programme and movement
The individual summer redevelopment revisits form and circulation, seeking to reduce overlapping functions and bring greater consistency to the spatial language. Plans, sections, axonometrics and a physical model describe connections between research, archive and living spaces. They present a distinct individual development of the preceding collaborative exploration.
